Rebuilding the KGNC-AM Transmitter Plant -- Page 1
In February 1999 a severe ice storm wiped out most of the elevated counterpoise system and did significant damage to the sample and transmission lines. Jack Sellmeyer, PE and Steve White inspect the damage at Tower 2. In July 1999 we began work on a $250,000 remodeling project. The first order of business was to clean out 30 years of accumulated junk from the transmitter building. We hauled off two full dumpsters! Steve White, Chief Engineer; Henry White retired Chief Engineer; Jack Sellmeyer, PE and Jay Miller, Project Manager, pose in front of the old RCA 10KW transmitter. Henry was instrumental in locating many hidden wires and relays which escaped documentation!
We had to mow and cut an incredible amount of accumulated growth from around the pole line and locate numerous buried cables and the station ground strap. Perry Williams of Williams Ditching Service starts digging the "big ditch" for the new sample and transmission lines from the transmitter building to Tower 5. This ditch was 30 inches deep, sixteen inches wide and over 3,600 feet long! Ditching was completed and the bottom of the trench was lined with sand before cable laying commenced.
