Wooden box for 1929 #7 Steam Shovel set. Finger jointed white pine with brass end handles and hardware.

A circa 1916 oak box which probably did not come with the parts shown in the picture. The first Erector sets were made in 1913 and came in cardboard boxes. Note the large girders as compared with the following sets. Here is a complete 1929 version of the #7 Steam Shovel set. This beautiful set came from the son of the original owner who lived in Houston. The Steam Shovel was one of the most popular models of the "Classic" era of Erector sets.
Green boxes? You bet! This #6 set from 1934 had a new style motor, first offered in 1933. The green boxes were abandoned after several years making them fairly rare. This set is complete but needs the colorful cardbaord inserts. And they also came in blue! This 1938 #9 1/2 set featured an entirely new motor design. 1938 also marked the first year for the familiar Erector "house" and the parts cans with metal lids. Blue sets were offered through the early war years.
